The Top 10 Lies People Put on Their Résumés

The Top 10 Lies People Put on Their RsumsThe Top 10 Lies People Put on Their RsumsIf youve ever been tempted to insert a falsehood into your rsum to make you sound more qualified, youre far from alone. More than half of rsums contain lies, according to a 2012 study by Accu-Screen, Inc., ADP and the Society of Human Resource Managers. Its puzzling why anyone would make up his or herbei job history, especially when people can easily check references. A simple Google search can quickly uncover lies most of the time.Reasons vary greatly, from an applicant with a criminal record whos afraid his history would prevent him from being hired to someone looking to cover up an employment gap. Or maybe the job seeker simply doesnt have the required education or skills that a job requires, yet still feels hes qualified. Whatever the reason for the lie, there can be consequences beyond simply being caught. While theres no limit to what job applicants can lie about on their rsums, the consulting firm Marquet International compiled this list of the top 10 lies.1. Stretching dates of employment. We keep being told that working anywhere less than a year looks bad. So rather than fess up to the fact, some people are fudging their timelines.2. Inflating past accomplishments and skills. Theres a difference between enhancing actual skills and accomplishments and flat out lying. If you didnt do it, or dont know how to use it, dont list it.3. Enhancing titles and responsibilities. This ones easy enough to confirm with a call to the past employer, but many human resources managers dont necessarily check up on every candidate (sad but true). Embellishing what youve done in the past can trip you up if youre expected to take on similar tasks now and find youre unequipped for the role.4. Exaggerating education and fabricating degrees. This lie is one that could not only get you fired, but might also incite legal action on the part of your employer. Its simply not worth the risk.5. Unexplained gaps and periods of self employment. Rather than make up a fictional job to cover an employment gap, try honesty. If you were taking time off to raise children, go back to school or simply find yourself, no employer will fault you.6. Omitting past employment. This is a gray area. Technically youre not lying (though weve all heard the lying by omission argument), but theres probably a reason you removed your last job from your rsum. Maybe you got fired and burned major bridges. Again, try honesty.7. Faking credentials. Just like with lying about education, this can have serious consequences that can affect your entire professional future. Enough said.8. Falsifying reasons for leaving prior employment. Theres a tactful way of explaining being fired or quitting abruptly, and it doesnt have to involve lying. Just figure out the best way to explain it in as positive a light as possible.9. Providing fraudulent references. Coercing friends and family to lie and act as your professional re ferences can get them in trouble too. Value your friendships and look elsewhere for a genuine reference.10. Misrepresenting a military record. Because people in the military often get preferential treatment in the hiring process, it might be tempting to pose. But again, this is one of the more serious offenses when it comes to lying on your rsum, so if you value your future, keep your lips zipped.Honesty Really is the Best PolicyLying on your rsum doesnt end once youve been hired. Youve got to keep up the charade of each lie you planted for the rest of your career. Who can keep up with all of them?Even if youre convinced that telling the truth will keep you from getting hired, you might be surprised. No potential employer expects you to be perfect. And if they wont hire you because of the truth, its not the right role for you.Lindsay Olson is a founding partner and public relations recruiter with Paradigm Staffing and Hoojobs.com, a niche job board for public relations, communicatio ns, and social media jobs. How to Tell if a Candidate Will Fit Your Company Culture

How to Tell if a Candidate Will Fit Your Company CultureHow to Tell if a Candidate Will Fit Your Company CultureYou think youve found a great candidate for your job opening. Your potential employee has all of the right technical skills, experience and education. The interview went great - the candidate was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the job. The final step in the hiring process is determining if this candidate will be a fit with the company culture and the team youve worked so hard to build. How do you know? Here are some tips.Step 1 Define your company cultureThe first step comes long before youre at the point of making an offer to a candidate. Clearly assessing your own company culture first and knowing what type of employee you believe will fit in - before you departure interviewing - is the key to making a good hire. This step is especially critical in todays fast-paced IT hiring environment. These days theres no time for a long debate about fit with the workplace env ironment. If you have a good candidate, you need to act quickly to make them an offer or they will move onto another opportunity.Step 2 Make the most of the interviewMaking the most of your interview (or interviews) is critical. Answers to specific questions and body language during an interview can also reveal a lot about whether or not a candidate will be a fit for the company culture. For exampleQuestions Asking what characteristics are exhibited by the best boss you ever had or tell me about the management style that allows you to do your best work provides insight into which type of company culture a candidate is successful in.Body Language Physical reactions to certain questions also can indicate where a candidates skills are and the type of work they value. Look for excitement or what makes the candidate light up and become animated when describing their past work.Stories Asking a candidate to share stories and accomplishments related to projects outside of paid work helps identify the candidates passions and interests. These stories can convey a lot about a candidate without risking questions that may seem too personal. If youre working with a staffing firm, the recruiter may suggest a working interview in addition to a traditional interview. Working interviews can be a good option to examine how the candidate fits into the company culture at your firm. Having the candidate meet with your team and actually do the job for a day is a great way for both sides to get as much information as they possibly can before they make a commitment.Step 3 Trust your gutDo not ignore gut instinct. There is absolutely something to be said when a decision just doesnt feel right. Dig deeper and explore why the decision is causing you to step back. Is it hard to envision the candidate smoothly transitioning into your workplace environment?References are a great source to help you sort through any apprehension about fit with the company culture. Asking references specific questions about your concerns or having them talk you through an experience with the candidate can help expand your knowledge of how that candidate works and what workplace environment is best. Often this different perspective is exactly what you need to hear.Although hiring in todays tech world is moving at a rapid pace, do your due diligence quickly but efficiently. You dont want to hire out of desperation. If you do, that can cost everyone a lot in the long run.Interview technology candidates right awayIf youre hiring an IT pro, we can help make the process easier. Designing the Perfect Swing

Designing the Perfect Swing Designing the Perfect Swing meerbusen is a game where people will take any edge they can get. Just ask the golfers competing for a certain green jacket in Augusta, GA, recently. But even if its just a friendly foursome, that doesnt mean you dont want to come in firstin fact, the sporting goods industry counts on it. Better yardage, less slice, anything to turn bogeys into birdies. Golf club designer Tom Wishon of Tom Wishon Golf, Durango, CO, says the mechanical engineering edge is found in club fit. Where many golfers stand to get better is by having their clubs designed around their game, he says. For the pro, it wont make much of a difference, but for anyone with a handicap of 8 or worsethey can make great improvements. Golf club designer Tom Wishon at work. Image Tom Wishon Golf Technology Wishon, co-author of the bestselling book The Search for the Perfect Golf Club, says a major problem in clubs is that theyre sold to standard specs so they can be sh ipped fully assembled to retailers. Youre selling it to golfers so different in ability and swing that its just luck if it matches up well, he says. Wishon believes an engineer who can focus in on what an individual golfer needs can be an important asset. First you look at the size, strength, and athletic ability of the golfer, he says. Think about the physics, the engineering that can be put into that club head and shaft. The head speed has to do with whether they can hold onto the wrist cock angle related to the inertiato golfer spine angleto rotationand what changes that in their golf swing. If you unhinge the wrist cock angle, rotation increases dramatically, putting more stress on the golfer so they cant swing as well. We have this idea that the longer the club, the better the shot, but 70% of golfers have length that actually prevents them from playing to the best of their ability. Detail of one of Wishons designs. Image Tom Wishon Golf Technology Key fitting specs to look at include assessing the club length, loft angle on the club head face, the lie angle between the shaft and sole of the club, total weight of the golf club, and the swing-weight balance ratio of the weight distribution in head versus the rest of the club. The whole business of club fitting is being a true diagnostician, says Wishon. Like a doctor seeing a patient, the golfer comes with the symptoms Does he slice it? How much? High? Low? A club fitter needs to watch you take shots and do measurements on you and analyze various swing motions to truly know if they can help. You can take an average golfers slice from 30 yards to 10 yards. Instead of losing balls, theyre in play. Wishon, whos been designing for 40 years, was a teaching pro who received his engineering knowledge through mentors, such as Art Mittendorf, an electrical engineer. But he doesnt believe you need to be an elite golfer to be a top club fitter. It helps if youre good at the game but an advanced degree in mechanical e ngineering can give you strong knowledge that can come into play, he says. You start to see how many details go into an effective swing through the club. So many people have a game inside of them that they dont even know is there. Its a lot of fun to watch their game improve just by coming up with a better fit. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. An engineer who can focus in on what an individual golfer needs can be an important asset.Tom Wishon, Tom Wishon Golf

3 Reasons to Say Yes to a Work Challenge - The Muse

3 Reasons to Say Yes to a Work Challenge - The Muse3 Reasons to Say Yes to a Work ChallengeRecently I welches asked to lead a project that would have a positive impact on not just my team, but on other teams across my company. Because I have a hard time turning things down at work, I accepted the challenge without a second thought. But there was one catch Id never led a project like this before. And frankly, itd been a long time since I led a group of people toward a shared goal- and the last time I tried, it didnt go particularly well.I struggled throughout and as we made our way through the process, I thought Id made a mistake in accepting the challenge. I kept thinking it would have been better for everyone if I had said, Maybe next time. But then a funny thing happened- the project got done and I became an authority on something I previously knew nothing about. Even though its easy to believe youll fail when you say yes to doing something new, its just as easy to believe in yours elf. (OK, almost as easy.) If you need encouragement in the right direction, here are a few things I learned from taking a leap and saying yes.1. Youll Find Out That You Were More Qualified Than You RealizedHeres the thing Unless your boss is trying to get herself fired, shes also under a lot of pressure to get things done. She has goals she has to hit and she cant do it herself. As tempting as it would be to assume that shes given you this assignment because theres nobody else to do it, the truth is that your manager wouldnt have trusted you with it if she didnt actually think you could get it done. I know that your impostor syndrome is making you say, Youre not up for this and you dont know anything. But heres the thing- the only rolle telling you that youre unqualified is you. After all, your boss asked you because she thinks the exact opposite. It took me a few days to realize this, but when I did, I knew that the only person who was skeptical of my abilities was me.2. Youll Lea rn That Asking for Help Really Doesnt Make You Look DumbThe natural conclusion to taking an assignment youre unfamiliar with is to keep all your questions to yourself. You want to prove that you can crush it, so you take it upon yourself to find every relevant resource out there thatll help you become a subject matter expert in no time. But what I ended up learning is that approach can actually make you look less qualified than simply asking for help. Its OK you dont have all the answers. Your boss probably knows thats the case. But he also trusts you to figure out the right people you should be leaning on for help. So dont rely too heavily on your own skills (or Google), especially since you know youre lacking some of the necessary experience to get this task done- and done well. 3. Youll Realize Its OK That the End Results Not PerfectIn terms of the project I was leading, I didnt maintain the process we established at the onset perfectly. At times, I ran around like a madman becau se I had no idea how to resolve certain issues. And ultimately, while we completed it, there were plenty of things I wished had gone differently. But the good news for me? Most of my I wish Id done this differently thoughts didnt matter to the end product. I turned in what was asked, even if it wasnt exactly what I wouldve liked to submit. In the likely scenario that your final result isnt exactly what you hoped it would be, focus more on the lessons youve learned throughout the experience. Were there breakdowns in communication that you can resolve for the next time? Were there knowledge gaps that you currently have the answers to for future attempts? Even if the project wasnt executed perfectly, youll learn plenty of valuable lessons from the experience. In my case, I learned so much about a completely new area of the companys business that Ive now become the subject matter expert on it. Hey, I get it. Its easy for me to sit behind my computer and tell you to accept more assignmen ts at work, even if your previous experience would suggest that youll aufgabe on your face. But Im a total scaredy cat about new challenges. And not only did the project get done, I learned a few things that will impact the rest of my career. So, if someone like me can survive this harrowing experience, Im totally confident that you can too.

10 New Remote Jobs Were Just Posted... and this one from SeatGeek wont be open for long bit.ly/2wa3ztp We need gender neutral dress codes in the workplace. If you dont yet agree with that statement, look no farther than a 55-page presentation given to women executives at Ernst Young in a June 2018 training. pThe presentation, which made headlines last month when an offended participant a href=https//www.huffpost.com/entry/women-ernst-young-how-to-dress-act-around-men_n_5da721eee4b002e33e78606a target=_blankleaked it to the Huffington Post/a, reinforced gendered stereotypes of how women should dress and present themselves at work. And this particular training focused only on the male-female binary. Employees who identify as transgender or nonbinary might feel even more burdened by dress code policies based on gender. /ppImagine how much more productive all employees, regardless of gender, could be, if they werent focused on avoiding dress code policing./ppTraditional gender-based dress codes can also discriminate on the basis of race. Many grooming guidelines for women, including rules on acceptable haircuts, are extra burdens for black employees, particularly those who want to wear their hair in natural styles. a href=https//daily.jstor.org/how-natural-black-hair-at-work-became-a-civil-rights-issue/ target=_blankIn 2010, Chastity Jones got a job offer/a to be a customer service representative from Catastrophe Management Solutionsbut the offer was contingent on her cutting off her locs. Employees whose faiths keep them from cutting their hair or necessitate that they wear certain clothing (including head coverings) shouldnt be forced to adapt their beliefs to what their employer deems p rofessionally appropriate for a woman at work./ppThe possibility for gender-, race-, and faith-based discrimination posed by prescriptive employee dress codes has a href=https//www.hrc.org/resources/workplace-dress-codes-and-transgender-employees target=_blankled the Human Rights Campaign to recommend/a that if an employer has a dress code, it should modify it to avoid gender stereotypes and enforce it consistently. Alternatively, codes that require attire professionally appropriate to the office or unit in which an employee works are gender-neutral./ph3Okay, So Gender Neutral Dress Codes Sound Good. What Do They Look Like?/h3pIn their simplest (which, in my opinion, also means best) form, gender neutral dress codes at the workplace can take the form of General Motors dress policy.
